When should you use high beam headlights?

Using high beam headlights is appropriate on open country roads when there is no oncoming traffic because high beams provide a greater range of visibility compared to low beams. This enhanced visibility is particularly beneficial in rural settings where streetlights are scarce and the roads are typically darker. The increased illumination helps drivers to see further ahead, making it easier to spot potential hazards, animals, or pedestrians.

In foggy conditions, heavy rain, or well-lit areas, using high beams can actually cause more problems than benefits. Fog and rain can reflect the light back at the driver, reducing visibility rather than enhancing it. Additionally, in well-lit areas, low beams are more than sufficient since streetlights already illuminate the road, and high beams can be blinding to other drivers. Therefore, high beams are best reserved for situations without surrounding traffic where maximum visibility is needed.
